Progress. Progress!<\/b><\/p>\n<p>So some good and bad news! This morning we had the strongestbuild of the game yet! The bad news is that it crashed just before the end ofthe game (we were very sad). So we&rsquo;re nearly at the stage where you can play Ether from start to finish with a few things missing here and there. There are still some big systems left to go in butmoment to moment, the game is playable and it\u2019s just missing those smallerdetails \u2013 this door doesn&rsquo;t rotate enough, or that lighting is a little off, those<br \/>\nkinds of things. <\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re looking to be in a pretty good place which<br \/>\nmeans we\u2019ll be opening up the game to heavier play testing. We\u2019ll be getting a<br \/>\nbunch of people to come into the studio to play and break every aspect of the<br \/>\ngame which is fun but also worrying. The good and less stressful thing this time round though is<br \/>\nthat we don\u2019t have to \u2018focus\u2019 test which means testing whether the game is good or<br \/>\nnot \u2013 nothing in the design of the game is changing so even if you thought<br \/>\nEther One sucked first time round, well, I guess it will suck again for you! \ud83d\ude09\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A lot of the work we\u2019re doing now is focusing on<br \/>\noptimisation; things like combining assets we use multiple times into single<br \/>\nmeshes and trying to bring material calls down along with level streaming and<br \/>\nculling. We\u2019ve not done hardware specific performance tests yet but we\u2019ll start<br \/>\nthat once all the core gameplay stuff is out of the way.<\/p>\n<p>The main systems we have left are mostly the save game<br \/>\n(which is already halfway coded) and also our writing mechanic in the game<br \/>\nwhich will be powered by Unreal\u2019s UMG (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Us4la1ghbRg#t=58\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">you can see an example of this on our trailer at<br \/>\n1:00<\/a>). We\u2019re having a few issues with it at the moment since UMG is such a new<br \/>\nfeature of the engine but you would expect that with any new feature \u2013 it\u2019s mostly about working around those kinks and being<br \/>\nas efficient as we can. <\/p>\n<figure><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/66.media.tumblr.com\/c087c42554a0918ec2d20ad950591d92\/tumblr_inline_pcrz6nWIRp1qmp1cp_540.png?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/figure>\n<blockquote><p><b><i><a href=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/RzPrctH.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(HighResImage)<\/a><\/i><\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr>\n<p>It\u2019s been fun to deconstruct the game from UDK and build it<br \/>\nback up in UE4 too. The team on multiple occasions have been thinking \u2018what the<br \/>\nheck was I doing when I put that into the game\u2019. We\u2019ve found a whole<br \/>\nbunch of mistakes and badly optimised things so it\u2019s been a good process to<br \/>\niron out all the gameplay bugs \u2013 Some of them are super awful that I hope to<br \/>\nnever repeat again! I feel a lot more confident with implementing major gameplay elements<br \/>\ninto Blueprints than I did when using Kismet also. Blueprints feel more robust and<br \/>\nit feels as though you\u2019re actually affecting the code of the game whereas with<br \/>\nKismet it always felt a little janky \u2013 maybe that\u2019s a physiological thing but<br \/>\nimplementing the gameplay has been a smooth and quick process nonetheless.<\/p>\n<figure><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/66.media.tumblr.com\/6f1b186baa618a99234eeaf9664e66ca\/tumblr_inline_pcrz6pQ4HG1qmp1cp_540.png?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/figure>\n<blockquote><p><i><a href=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/xjrfp1X.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>(HighResImage)<\/b><\/a><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr>\n<p><b>LEARNING EXPERIENCE<\/b><\/p>\n<p>I few things I\u2019ve thought about whilst developing in UE4 are<br \/>\nhow we could have been even more efficient with the port from UDK to UE4.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of hitting the ground running, I wish we had done a<br \/>\nfew more tests to see what was possible in UE4 and laid a ground work before developing a full game. We\u2019re<br \/>\nstarting to find new workflows as we used the engine more which is obviously inevitable. It has meant<br \/>\nthe implementation of new systems has been quicker from code to blueprint and<br \/>\ntherefore communication between coder to audio, art and design has become a<br \/>\nsmoother process. Things like creating a sceneroot in code within a blueprint,<br \/>\nthen adding a mesh on top and exposing the mesh into the editor is a big time<br \/>\nsaver \u2013 it means a lot of the \u2018F4\u2019 properties we had in UDK can be added<br \/>\nthrough construction script (or the code equivalent). Things as simple on a<br \/>\ndoor blueprint like creating a variable called \u2018TestDoorEndRotation\u2019 and when clicked shows you where the door will end on its rotation saves seconds per door but<br \/>\nin a game with over 200 doors those seconds soon amount. <\/p>\n<p>Also implementing level streaming earlier on would have<br \/>\nhelped. If you have your game type and player set up, tackling streaming levels<br \/>\nbefore gameplay would help a lot. As it happens, I did 90% of the puzzle things<br \/>\nthat didn\u2019t require custom code in the first quarter (2\/3 months) of development on the<br \/>\npersistent level. This meant that when I went to start streaming levels I had<br \/>\nthe choice between deleting the BP\u2019s and adding them again on a sub-level or leaving<br \/>\nthe actors behind on the persistent. It\u2019s not a huge issue, but if you had all<br \/>\nthe sub-levels set up to begin with, I could have made that process a lot<br \/>\neasier for myself.<\/p>\n<p>Definitely the biggest learning curve has been<br \/>\nre-establishing the communication between designer &amp; programmer. UE4 has<br \/>\nmade things even quicker to throw out gameplay actors and we\u2019re constantly<br \/>\nfinding nice little features that help us focus on the design of the game rather<br \/>\nthan spending time figuring out how to do a certain technical thing which is<br \/>\ngreat. Although it\u2019s still quite fun playing with new toys in upgrades to the<br \/>\nengine!<\/p>\n<figure><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/66.media.tumblr.com\/7a25a0cc03fbb4dc95abfe862822830e\/tumblr_inline_pcrz6pDI6A1qmp1cp_540.png?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/figure>\n<blockquote><p><b><i><a href=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/bp6EanX.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(HighResImage)<\/a><\/i><\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr>\n<p><b>AWKWARD<\/b><b>\u00a0ISSUES<\/b><\/p>\n<p>There was a slight learning curve when trying to use material instances through PP and also Matinees. Since it feels as though Epic are trying to<br \/>\ntransition out the use of Matinee for a more robust tool in future releases<br \/>\nthey left Matinee pretty much the same from UDK. However changes to how we trigger<br \/>\nthings are different in UE4. Previously we used Matinee to trigger our restoration<br \/>\neffect in the world (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Us4la1ghbRg#t=75\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">you can see the effect on our trailer at point 1:15<\/a>).<br \/>\nThe image below shows how it\u2019s a slightly different set-up now, it\u2019s not that it\u2019s<br \/>\nmore time consuming \u2026 it just feels more long winded and as a result has slowed down some of the progress on the visual side.<\/p>\n<figure><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/66.media.tumblr.com\/1bca08d485fba41b8e065b7b9f539613\/tumblr_inline_pcrz6pNnKx1qmp1cp_540.png?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>We also have a big issue with the notes and localisation in<br \/>\nthe game as our previous formatting of notes in UDK now doesn&rsquo;t work and there<br \/>\ndoesn&rsquo;t seem to be a solution at present. As some of you will know, we have A<br \/>\nLOT of notes in the game so this is a worrying issue for us. Epic, however,<br \/>\nhave been great with their dev support and hopefully we can get those issues<br \/>\nironed out pretty quickly.<\/p>\n<p><b>WHAT\u2019S NEXT?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Once we get those big systems in place that we need to start<br \/>\nheavily play testing the game we\u2019ll be moving onto PS4 specific things and<br \/>\nmaking sure that the console release is as solid as it can be! This is the most exciting part about the whole process &#8211; being able to release our game onto the Playstation will be a huge dream come true &#8211; we&rsquo;re all hugely excited to get it out to you all that aren&rsquo;t able to play Ether on PC! This is the reason we spent the last year working on a game we already spend 2 and a half years creating to make sure you all have the best possible experience &#8211; we wanted to do it ourselves and not hand it off to and outsourcing studio. We&rsquo;ve put a lot of thought attention to detail will be there so it should be very cool! We don\u2019t<br \/>\ncurrently have a release date for a Playstation release but we\u2019ll be sure to post as soon as we<br \/>\ndo. <\/p>\n<p>Another huge bit of news is that we&rsquo;ve been invited by Unreal Engine to attend this years <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unrealengine.com\/blog\/community-members-gdc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GDC in San Francisco<\/a>!
