WHERE IS MY MAC VERSION OF ETHER ONE?
Hi all,
A lot of you have been asking about the Mac version of Ether One. It’s great to hear your interest to get Ether One onto Mac and it’s definitely something we’re focused on doing.
But Ether One released back in March, why is the Mac version still not out?
There are a couple of factors that are affecting the release. Firstly, it was complete oversight on our behalf. We thought we would be able to get a Mac version of the game out relatively quickly since the Unreal Engine supports the Mac. When we came to build Ether One for the Mac we could not get it running without a serious drop in quality.
We’ve reached out to quite a few people in the community to get them to test different Ether One builds on the Mac. We’re getting lots of useful feedback from those who have tested so we really appreciate that support. Ether One runs fine with 512mb graphics cards but on anything else (256mb for example) the frame rate drops to 1 frame a second (sometimes not even that). From the collection of Macs we have been testing on, it turns out that the majority of people own 256mb cards and it’s only a small percentage of people that can get the game running well.
So what are we doing to fix that?
As a few of you might have heard we’re also developing on the PS4. This in no way means we’re putting the Mac to the side. Since we’re changing engines from Unreal 3 to Unreal 4 it means that we also benefit from newer technology. Our goal right now is to get a small chunk of the game up and running in Unreal 4 which we’re quite close to doing. If you’ve been following progress you’ll have seen some of the images. We’ll then take that build and create a Mac build and test performances again. If it turns out that we get much better performance (which we’re expecting that we might) then we will wait until the Unreal Engine 4 version of the game is finished to release on Mac. This will mean you will have to wait a little longer for the Mac version of the game but it will also play much better and be more optimised.
We’re doing our very best on optimising the game to run on the lower end hardware – something we’re very committed to doing since a few of our team members and our family own Macs and want to play the game too! We would never want to release anything that isn’t the best quality and since it’s a narrative driven game, we wouldn’t want to release now and ruin the game for a future, more optimised play through of the game.
We’re hoping to have a new Mac build tested in the next couple of weeks and we’ll be sure to post any progress we make. We’ll also be sending it out for other to people to test and hopefully we’ll receive lots of good feedback from it.
For those of you that only play Mac games and don’t have access to PC games, we know that it can be very frustrating (as some of you have made us aware!). Just know that we are working very hard on getting the game out to you all.
Thank you all for your patience & we’ll hopefully have some Mac news soon.
